Endocrinology

Hormones are messenger substances, which circulate throughout the body. The effects of a hormonal dysfunction can significantly affect well-being, weight and performance, and in rare cases can be life-threatening.

Endocrinology, the "science of hormones", deals with thyroid, sugar and metabolic diseases, among other things. Hormone-producing glands include the thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, pancreas, testicles and ovaries.

Diagnosis and treatment

By means of a blood or urine examination we determine the hormone concentration in the blood or urine. In addition, we use ultrasound, other imaging procedures, nuclear medical diagnostics, but also functional tests of the hormone systems in order to diagnose and treat the respective disorders or diseases.

The thyroid gland is enlarged, not least due to the iodine deficiency of recent decades in many people, often accompanied by nodules. The nodules may participate too little or too much in the production of thyroid hormone.
In most cases, nodules in the thyroid gland are benign. During thyroid sonography, which we routinely perform in our department, the size and tissue structure of the thyroid gland is recorded and the nodes are described and measured. Suspicious nodules are punctured with a small needle for tissue examination. The ultrasound also provides valuable information in cases of hypothyroidism.

Diseases of the pituitary gland are often caused by a benign brain tumour (adenoma), but also by circulatory disorders, head injuries or congenital defects. It can lead to hormonal overproduction, as in acromegaly, Cushing's disease or prolactinoma, or other hormone production is disturbed.
Together with you and our team, we will decide whether an operation, a drug therapy or a combination makes sense.

Our adrenal glands mainly produce the stress hormones and hormones of the salt and water balance. An increased production can lead to a strong increase in blood pressure. This cause can be proven or excluded by a blood test. A deficiency of these hormones (Addison's disease) can also trigger life-threatening crises, which often require intensive medical care.
Disease patterns such as osteoporosis and other diseases of bone metabolism, PCO syndrome (many cysts in the ovaries), obesity and hormone-producing tumours of the gastrointestinal tract are also diagnosed and treated in our department.

Reduced production of sex hormones leads to sexual dysfunction, osteoporosis and unfulfilled desire for children. These hormonal disorders are often treated on an interdisciplinary basis.

Many hormone disorders are easily treatable with medication. Control and therapy monitoring should be carried out by an endocrinologist (hormone specialist), as with some drugs side effects and conditions of use must be taken into account.

If an operation is necessary, for example the removal of a hormone-producing tumour, the complete diagnostic and preparation takes place on our ward. Here we work closely with the surgical clinics represented at our hospital.
