Reopening of chronic coronary occlusions (CTO)

Chronically occluded coronary vessels can nowadays be reopened using modern catheter technology. The procedure represents an alternative treatment to open heart surgery.

The reopening (recanalization) of chronic coronary occlusions (CTO) is performed at the Heart Centre Niederrhein by an experienced team of cardiologists. Four cardiac catheter laboratories with state-of-the-art technical equipment are available for Treatment.

Cather Technology replaces open heart surgery

Chronic obstruction of the coronary arteries is a common disease in people with coronary heart disease. Especially for older patients or patients with an increased risk of surgery, catheter-assisted reopening is an alternative to open heart surgery.
Via the inguinal artery, the cardiologist inserts one or two catheters with great sensitivity up to the coronary arteries. With the help of a contrast medium that makes the vessels visible on the X-ray image, occlusions can be localized, recanalized and then gradually expanded by a balloon. Usually, in addition to the balloon dilatation, we use a vascular support (stent) to prevent a renewed constriction at a dilated site.

Collaterals — arterial vascular bridges

If a narrowing of the coronary arteries progresses only slowly, the body can usually help itself for a certain period of time: The blood seeks for bypasses (collaterals) to maintain the blood supply in the undersupplied areas. However, this does not always work sufficiently. If the chronic reduced blood flow leads to complaints and restrictions in cardiac Performance, a medical examination is urgently required.

We will discuss the most suitable form of treatment with you in detail. Your therapy also depends, for example, on whether only one or more vessels are affected or whether there are comorbidities or previous operations. We perform both antegrade and retrograde recanalization via collateral vessels. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

Training Centre

The Heart Centre Helios Krefeld is a training centre for the recanalisation of chronic coronary occlusions. There are regular courses and workshops to learn the antegrade and retrograde techniques.
