Radiation therapy for breast cancer during surgery

Radiation therapy for breast cancer during surgery

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is an intensive radiation treatment during surgery. It allows to destroy cancer cells in a target area while sparing normal surrounding tissue.

Every breast-preserving cancer operation should be followed by radiotherapy. Ionising radiation (radiotherapy) damages the genetic material of cancer cells to such an extent that they do not multiply any further. Healthy cells have a natural repair mechanism and can repair such damage. With modern radiation equipment, this therapy can be effective and gentle.

Part of the radiation required after breast-conserving surgery can now also be carried out during the operation (intraoperatively). A special radiation unit is available for this purpose at the Helios Breast Centre Linker Niederrhein. This further increases local safety, as this radiation method can reduce the local risk of relapse to a minimum. We will advise you in detail whether this innovative radiation method can be used for your type of breast cancer.
