MRI diagnostic

MRI diagnostic

If a prostate carcinoma is suspected, tissue from the prostate must be removed and examined more closely. Modern imaging techniques improve diagnostics and also offer many advantages for the patient.

At our centre we use multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

With the help of the MRI we first examine the prostate. The MRI makes it possible to visualize tumor areas within the prostate. In addition, we can detect changes in the tissue in cancer areas down to the molecular level. We identify suspicious areas on the screen and mark them digitally on the images.

MRI biopsy provides security

We use this technique for MRI-supported tissue sampling (biopsy) of the prostate: The MRI image is combined with the live ultrasound image so that both images are exactly superimposed on each other and create an exact 3D model of the prostate. This allows us to control the path of the needle during the biopsy and precisely target the areas in question.

In addition, we carry out systematic sampling from all areas of the organ. Overall, the procedure does not differ from a normal biopsy via the rectum or perineal region.

Precise monitoring

The 3D image of the prostate gland, designed for the first time, is helpful in subsequent biopsies, for example during active monitoring. The procedure thus enables precise repeat biopsies.

Procedure and further steps

At our clinic, we perform biopsies of the prostate gland mainly through the rectum. A local anaesthetic is used for this procedure, and if you wish, you can be in a kind of twilight sleep during the procedure.

Following the biopsy, the histological examination in the laboratory provides certainty as to whether a malignant tumour is present. If prostate cancer is present, the type, extent and aggressiveness of the disease are determined.
