Event recorder
Event recorders are small implantable ECG monitors which can record cardiac arrhythmia either automatically or when prompted by the patient. These devices are effective aids for selected patients which are used to diagnose arrhythmia which occurs only spasmodically; there are now very small models available, and implantation is a minimally invasive procedure. They can also be accessed remotely, which enables us to diagnose an abnormal rhythm as early as possible, and treat patients accordingly with the minimum of delay.
Home monitoring
Many event recorders, pacemakers and defibrillators can nowadays be monitored through remote access. We often use home monitoring of this kind at the Heart Center Leipzig, because it enables us to recognize arrhythmia or identify a defect in the device early on, and to start the appropriate treatment without delay.
A study to which the Department of Rhythmology was a major contributor found considerable benefits associated with home monitoring for patients with severe cardiac insufficiency in comparison with those receiving standard treatment, and even a reduction in the mortality rate.
The Heart Center can provide home monitoring support to a large number of companies manufacturing these little aids.
