Internal radiation
In internal radiation, also known as "brachytherapy", the radiation comes from a source that is placed in the body for a short time. This happens during an anaesthetic. The radiation source is inserted into the prostate twice, each time on a separate date. In addition, we carry out an outpatient external radiation treatment for four to six weeks. Each of these treatments only takes a few minutes and does not restrict your daily activities.
Another version is the placement of radiant, rice grain-sized beads into the prostate, so-called "seeds". These continuously emit radiation at a very low dose until the radiation ceases on its own. The seeds remain in the body and are not removed.
External radiation
In external radiation therapy, the radiation source is located in a sophisticated device, the prostate is irradiated from the outside. Should we decide together with you to undergo this treatment for prostate cancer, several outpatient appointments will usually be scheduled on weekdays for about six weeks. Each treatment only takes a few minutes. This form of radiation also does not lead to any restrictions in your everyday activity.
Protecting healthy tissue
By using the latest generation of linear accelerators and corresponding planning programs, we calculate the optimal radiation dose for each patient. The aim is to administer the radiation dose at exactly the right level so that the cancer cells die - but at the same time to keep the dose low enough to minimize the consequences for healthy tissue.
As a certified centre, we ensure that an interdisciplinary team of urologists, internal oncologists, radiotherapists and other specialists assess the disease and make recommendations. If radiotherapy is used in your case, your treatment will take place in our centre with the most modern technology according to the current state of medical knowledge.
