The mother-child centre at the Helios Hospital Krefeld has a birthing tub for water births. Our experienced delivery room team is highly trained and prepared to help your baby safely into the world even in water.
In addition to the birthing tub, three of our delivery rooms are equipped with normal bathtubs. These offer you the possibility to take a bath with aromatic oils during the birth to relax better and to process pain.
Advantages of water birth
Warm water, combined with quiet music, promotes optimal relaxation - and thus a more positive experience of the birth. Injuries such as perineal tears occur less frequently in water births than in other birth postures.
For the newborn baby, the stress of birth is reduced as it is born from the amniotic fluid into water. There is no risk of the baby getting water in the lungs during birth: the breathing reflex is only triggered when the newborn baby comes into contact with the air at the surface of the water.
Procedure and requirements
During the water birth, recordings of the child's heartbeat and control examinations of the cervix are carried out. You may have to leave the birthing tub for medical reasons. In principle, we do not administer medication, especially painkillers, during a water birth.
There are also restrictions under which water birth is excluded - for example, in the case of risk births or certain diseases of the expectant mother. In these cases we will discuss alternatives with you individually.
