Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)

A common condition as men get older ist the enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). In our clinic we specialize in the minimally invasive and surgical treatment.

Common symptoms of BPH range from problems completely emptying the bladder to frequent or sudden urge to urinate at night up to urinary retention.

While drug treatment is often considered in the early stages, further therapy is required in advanced stages. Depending on your symptoms, the size of your prostate, other health conditions you might have and your preferences you and your doctor will discuss a reduction of the prostate.

Our range of treatment

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP)

The standard procedure we use is the holmium laser enucleation of the prostate gland, or "Holep" for short. In this procedure, we remove the tissue of the prostate with the laser through the urethra. The advantages of this particularly gentle procedure are the low bleeding tendency and the possibility to treat even greatly enlarged prostates (over 100 grams) endoscopically. In comparison to other laser procedures, in which the prostate tissue is vaporized, we obtain tissue for microscopic examination with the Holep. In this way, small prostate cancer foci can be detected early on, which usually do not require any further therapy, but should be specially checked. Read more

Transurethral resection in saline (TURis)

Smaller prostate volumes, which can also cause problems, are removed via the urethra with a fine, bipolar electrical loop. Here too, we use a modern, minimally invasive procedure, known as TURis for short. In contrast to TUR-P, saline solution is used as the irrigation fluid in this procedure. A serious complication, the so-called TUR syndrome, can thus no longer occur.

Rezum

The Rezum procedure is a therapy with steam. This gentle treatment is particularly suitable for patients who do not tolerate or do not wish to undergo drug therapy. The procedure is performed under short anaesthesia. Read more

Open retropubic prostatectomy for large prostates (Millin Surgery)

In certain cases, open surgery according to Millin is still the procedure of choice to ensure freedom from symptoms for a longer period of time. This is the case, for example, if the prostate is massively enlarged or if bladder stones are present at the same time. The excess tissue is removed through a small incision in the lower abdomen with great sensitivity. The procedure has been tried and tested for over 70 years and is characterised by a short duration of the operation and a quick recovery after the operation.

Prostate Artery Embolization

For men in advanced age to whom we cannot recommend any of the above mentioned surgical treatments due to other diseases, we have "Prostate Artery Embolization" (PAE) available. In this procedure, the blood supply to the prostate is precisely interrupted after local anaesthesia via a vascular catheter. We use this procedure together with radiologists who have extensive experience. PAE is a safe and internationally proven procedure for the treatment of prostate enlargement, but has not yet been scientifically proven to be equivalent to established procedures. It is therefore an alternative solution for patients who are not eligible for surgery. More information about PAE

Our experts and you will discuss in detail which procedure is best suited to your personal situation.
