Lung metastases

Some cancer patients suffer from metastases during the course of their disease. If only the lungs are affected, the lung metastases can often be surgically removed with the prospect of healing.

Lung metastases are secondary tumours of a tumour in the lung. Some types of cancer, such as intestinal or kidney cancer, often spread into the lungs, while other types of cancer are less common. In some cases, the metastases are discovered right at the beginning of cancer diagnosis, sometimes they develop years later.
In certain cases, surgery for pulmonary metastases is useful; sometimes it is even the only way to treat the cancer. It is always important to make a careful diagnosis and to work closely with the doctors involved in the original cancer treatment.

Operation of metastases using laser technique

In our clinic, we use a modern precision laser scalpel for the operation of lung metastases, with which the tumor foci can be removed from the lung tissue accurate to the millimeter and much more gently than in conventional surgery. Patients only suffer a minimal loss of lung function and recover much faster after such an operation.
In contrast to lung cancer, we avoid the removal of larger lung sections in order to preserve the patient's quality of life. Another reason is that malignant metastases in the lungs sometimes recur after years and can be operated on again if there are sufficient breathing reserves.

Treatment process and consultation

After the diagnosis has been made and a very thorough examination to exclude further metastases, we discuss together with the specialists of our lung cancer centre - pneumologists, internal oncologists, radiotherapists and lung surgeons - which treatment method offers the best chances for the patient. Laser therapy has a chance of success if the lung metastases and the original tumour can be completely removed.
