As a designated department for septic surgery, we are specialised in the treatment of bone and soft tissue infections.
Treatment of bone inflammations
In a bone infection (osteomyelitis), pathogens enter the bone or nearby tissue through an open wound or during a surgical procedure and settle there. In rarer cases, germs can be washed into the bone via the bloodstream. In both cases, the body reacts to the pathogen infestation with an infection.
Therapy consists of surgical removal of the infected (bone) tissue, followed by intravenous antibiotic therapy to ensure that any remaining bacteria in the bone and bloodstream are destroyed. We use a bone biopsy to see what kind of germ is causing your infection so that we can choose a targeted antibiotic that works well against the responsible pathogen.
The treatment of chronic bone infections may involve several surgical procedures and, if necessary, bone augmentation. We work closely as a team of plastic and orthopaedic surgeons to plan and perform these procedures together.
Treatment of soft tissue infections
Extensive soft tissue infections may also require local surgical intervention. Treatment includes drainage of pus accumulations, surgical wound cleansing (debridement) and concomitant antibiosis.
Specialised Septic Surgery
Our department for septic surgery consists of an interdisciplinary team of orthopaedic and plastic surgeons, infectiologists and wound managers who specialise in treating people with acute and chronic bone or soft tissue infections.
We have many years of experience in the treatment of the various forms of progression and offer all options of surgical therapy including plastic procedures to cover tissue defects.
Free flap surgery
For large wounds that cannot be closed, we offer free flap transplantation, i.e. tissue is taken from another part of the body and transferred to the area to be closed.
In addition to surgical measures, an efficient, individually adapted antibiotic therapy is of paramount importance, which is carried out in close cooperation with the Department of Infectiology.
We are there for you!
Every patient receives individual, multidisciplinary care from the outpatient examination to inpatient treatment and aftercare. If you show signs of a bone or soft tissue infection, we will be happy to advise you on which treatment is best for you individually.
