Dialysis and Apheresis Centre

Kidney replacement procedures like dialysis can detoxify and drain the body when the damaging of the kidneys inhibit the kidney function. Find interesting facts about dialysis and our services in this area.

In cooperation with the KfH kidney centre Krefeld our dialysis and apheresis centre offers all common kidney replacement and extracorporeal procedures, such as:

  • Haemodialysis (HD, HDF) with heparin and citrate anticoagulation
  • Peritoneal dialysis (CAPD, APD, IPD)
  • Haemofiltration (CVVH, CVVHD, CVVHDF)
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Immunoadsorption

Before treatment, we will inform you in detail about the various kidney replacement procedures and coordinate your individual treatment with you.

Dialysis ("blood washing") is a so-called kidney replacement therapy. If the kidneys are damaged, dialysis takes over the function of the kidneys to remove toxins and excess water from the body and balance the blood salt and acid-base balance.

How dialysis works

In the so-called haemodialysis, the blood is cleaned through an artificial filter on a special dialysis machine: the "artificial kidney". The blood is passed through the machine via a shunt or catheter in the vein, where toxins and water are filtered out and acid-bases and blood salts are balanced. A haemodialysis session takes about four to five hours.

Dialysis access and interdisciplinary cooperation

Ilnesses such as chronic kidney weakness require regular dialysis. To ensure that recurring treatments can be carried out easily and effectively, permanent dialysis access is provided. In the case of haemodialysis it is ensured through so called "shunt" or "fistula". In the case of peritoneal dialysis through a peritoneal dialysis catheter.

Both dialysis accesses require a minor surgical procedure, which is performed either by colleagues from shunt surgery or general surgery. We also work interdisciplinary in other areas:

  • Depending on the diagnosis, we offer plasmapheresis or immunoadsorption.
  • We support our various intensive care units in their treatment with all kidney replacement procedures.
  • We work closely with the outpatient dialysis practices in the area to provide you with optimal care.
