Aortic valve replacement: Ross Operation

As one of the few specialized German heart centres, we regularly perform the so-called Ross operation as an alternative to aortic valve replacement.

In the Ross operation, the patient's own pulmonary artery valve is brought into the position of the aorta and the removed pulmonary valve is in turn replaced by a donor valve.

The advantages of this technically demanding operation are an optimal circulatory function with full patient capacity, an excellent long-term prognosis and an unrestricted lifestyle without haemodilution. The professional reintegration of the patient is usually possible without any problems.

The isolated aortic valve disease in young patients up to the age of 55 years, in women who wish to have children as well as in children and adolescents is curently considered to be the indication for the Ross operation. During the Ross operation, the patient's own pulmonary artery valve is brought into the position of the aorta and the removed pulmonary valve is in turn replaced by a donor valve.
At our heart centre the operation is performed by heart surgeons who have the experience of more than 500 operations (with a mortality rate of less than one percent).
