Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is a symptom of many illnesses and should always be taken seriously. Various causes such as asthma, scarring of the lungs (pulmonary fibrosis), pneumonia, heart disease but also stress can cause it.

We offer you comprehensive clarification and treatment for respiratory distress. You will be looked after by our competent team of doctors, therapists and nurses.

Recognize and treat

First of all, we will examine you thoroughly to find the cause of your shortness of breath and rule out other illnesses. For this we use modern examination methods such as

  • Analysis of lung function (body plethysmography)
  • Analysis of lung function under physical stress (spiroergometry)
  • X-ray examinations
  • Computer tomography

If you have a disease of the lungs, respiratory tract or cardiovascular system, we will discuss in detail with you what kind of therapy is necessary. The primary goal of treatment is to avoid or reduce your shortness of breath. Ultrasound examination of the heart (echocardiography).

Concomitantly long-term oxygen therapy can be used, which is coordinated by our respiratory- and physiotherapists. For many lung diseases, exercise is an important part of the therapy. If there are no exclusion criteria, we recommend that you take part in a medically supervised lung sports group.

Respiratory therapy centre

Our respiratory therapy centre takes care of your supply of inhalation and other respiratory therapy equipment as well as oxygen for your home (concentrators or liquid oxygen).

If acute respiratory distress occurs, we recommend

  • Avoid panic and physical exertion
  • Consult your doctor. Your doctor can assess whether the symptom of shortness of breath is a serious illness.
  • If shortness of breath is associated with blue discolouration of the lips, fever, drop in blood pressure, rapid pulse or chest pain, the cause of the shortness of breath must be clarified as quickly as possible. Call the emergency doctor immediately (112)
