Lymphoedema and lipoedema treatment

Lymphoedema and lipoedema treatment

Lipoedema and lymphoedema are conditions that cause excessive and painful swelling of the extremities, which can lead to physical limitations and a reduction in quality of life.

Lymphoedema

As part of our immune system, the lymphatic system fulfils important functions. This includes the transport of excess fluid and waste products from the intercellular spaces and thus the drainage of the tissue. If the lymphatic drainage is disturbed, exactly this fluid accumulates in the tissue. The consequences are clearly visible: the affected parts of the body are swollen, and there is often a feeling of pressure or tightness. Lymphoedema generally occurs in the arms or legs, rarely in the head, neck, torso or genitals. Lymphoedema can be congenital (primary) or acquired (secondary). The latter often occurs after infections, trauma and cancer therapy.

Treatment of lymphoedema

We use the fluorescence method for diagnosis. A substance that is harmless to you is injected into the lymphatic system via the hand or foot, so that all lymphatic channels are displayed.

The primary goal of the treatment is the regulation of the lymph and thus the permanent improvement of your symptoms. In addition to conservative procedures such as lymphatic drainage and compression therapy, surgical procedures are becoming increasingly important in lymphoedema therapy. Depending on your individual clinical picture, two lymphatic surgical technologies are available to reduce swelling.

Super microsurgical lymphatic surgery
In this procedure, we connect the lymphatic vessel with impaired drainage to a superficial, small vein. This allows the accumulated lymph fluid to drain and the swelling to decrease.

Lymph node transfer
With the help of the transfer of healthy lymph nodes into the affected region, we also achieve the drainage of the accumulated fluid. The inserted lymph nodes serve as an additional filter station and regulate the tissue fluid.

Lipoedema

Lipoedema is a fat distribution disorder in which excessive body fat accumulates on the legs, hips, buttocks and arms. The disease occurs predominantly in women and usually begins in phases of hormonal change such as puberty or pregnancy. The increased fatty tissue causes pain and restricted movement in the long term, while the middle of the body, hands and feet remain slim.

Liposuction for severe lipoedema

Initially, all possibilities of conservative therapy should be used to reduce tension and pressure pain. The treatment consists of lymph drainage, subsequent compression and exercise therapy. If these measures are not successful, we offer medical liposuction as a surgical procedure. Liposuction removes excess fat cells, which can reduce swelling and pain.

We are there for you!

Despite the similar external appearance, differentiating lymphoedema from lipoedema is important for successful treatment. We have many years of experience in the treatment of both diseases and will advise you comprehensively. We work closely with the Centre for Vascular Medicine and discuss in detail with you which treatment option is best for you. After the therapy, regular discussions and follow-up appointments take place.
