Nervous diseases: Networking

Our peripheral nervous system ensures that we can move safely and flexible through our lives. It acts as an intermediary between the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body. The physical symptoms and causes of illness are just as complex and diverse as the underlying network.

Feet feel numb and ache, tingling sensations disturb when falling asleep, walking becomes unsafe. These are the typical symptoms of diseases of the peripheral nervous system.

If several nerves are affected, polyneuropathy is present by definition. Its causes are manifold and therefore require a thorough diagnostic workup. This includes detailed neurophysiological tests (i.e. electrical testing of the conduction properties of the nerves), broad screening for metabolic diseases (including diabetes, vitamin deficiency diseases), diseases of internal organs (for example the kidneys or liver), inflammatory causes (for example tick-borne infections or inflammations mediated by the immune system) and occasionally genetic tests. In the case of severe deficits, it is not uncommon for a sample to be taken, a nerve biopsy, to clarify the cause conclusively.

On the one hand, the therapy aims at eliminating the cause, on the other hand it aims at symptomatic symptom relief, for example the effective elimination of nerve pain. Our neurological clinic offers a comprehensive diagnosis and therapy of peripheral nervous diseases.
