Induction of birth

Induction of birth

As a rule, the body of the expectant mother begins the birth without help from the outside. Sometimes, however, it might be necessary to induce the birth. The most important answers at a glance:

In what cases is a birth initiated?

We induce the birth artificially if it is medically necessary - for example, because of expected complications due to the course of pregnancy or medical history.
The decision on the timing of an induction is always taken individually. If the pregnancy progresses unobtrusively, the induction can also be made ten days after the calculated date.  Our doctors will clarify the necessity and date of the induction together with you

Where does the induction of labour take place?

The induction of labour takes place in our clinic as an in-patient, according to a fixed schedule and under intensive supervision. Between rest periods and free intervals, you also have the opportunity to go for walks and take relaxing baths.

When do I have to come to the clinic?

In order to provide you with optimum care and to save you waiting times, we plan the start of the induction depending on the workload in the delivery room. Please call on the planned day at 9 a.m. to find out the exact admission time.

Can anyone accompany me?

If you wish, you can be accompanied by one or two family members. At night we ask your accompanying persons to go home. If there are any new developments, we will of course inform them immediately by telephone.

Which method is used to induce the birth?

There are various medicines that can be used to induce labour. Our doctors will work with you to determine the appropriate method of induction.
The choice of method depends on various factors, such as your medical history, possible allergies and current cervical findings. It may be necessary to adjust the method during the course of the induction - we will of course also agree this with you.

How long does it take from induction to birth?

The duration of a birth induction is very individual. It can take three days, sometimes more, before the birth begins. Patience and distraction are required.
