Uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign, but can also cause various complaints: Many women have myomas on or in the uterus, so-called uterine fibroids.

Myomas are benign growths of the uterine lining that occur in about one third of all women between the ages of 30 and 50. Myoma growth is promoted by the female hormone oestrogen and is individually different. Depending on their number, size and location, fibroids can cause various symptoms.

Myomas: common symptoms

  • Bleeding disorders such as increased and/or prolonged menstruation
  • Severe menstrual pain
  • Chronic pain in lower abdomen and back
  • Foreign body sensation in the lower abdomen
  • Unfulfilled desire to have children and miscarriages
  • Feeling of pressure urinary bladder with increased urge to urinate
  • Feeling of intestinal pressure with disturbance of the intestinal activity
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Our treatment offer

Nowadays, there are various therapeutic options available to treat myomas successfully. In our consultation hours, we will analyse your symptoms in detail and carry out a detailed examination using ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We then discuss the findings with you and advise you on the possible treatment Options.

Therapy options

  • Drug therapy to decrease the intensity of bleeding and reduce myoma size
  • Myoma embolization: The blood vessels supplying the fibroids are closed (embolized) by a special catheter with tiny plastic beads. This cuts off the myoma from the blood supply. It "starves" and shrinks within a few months. The procedure is performed by the experts in interventional radiology and is performed under local anaesthesia of the groin.
  • Removal of myomas by uterine endoscopy: Depending on their location, some myomas can be removed via the vagina.
  • Removal of myomas by laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery): Gentle method for the removal of myomas or also for the removal of the entire uterus, if an organ-preserving procedure is not desired or not sensible. This so-called "keyhole surgery" through incisions of only a few millimetres in the abdominal wall is a very gentle surgical method, after which patients recover quickly.
  • Removal of myomas by abdominal incision: in very rare cases, a classic abdominal incision (similar to caesarean section) is required to remove the myomas or the uterus.
