Pateints safety in General and Visceral Surgery

Your well-being during your stay with us is very important to us. We have taken numerous measures to guarantee you a safe surgical procedure and the highest level of medical quality. You can find some of these precautions here.

Systematic OP preparation

An operation is always preceded by a thorough anamnesis and physical examination as well as a detailed explanation tailored to the operation by the surgeon, during which all questions on your part are answered. A second consultation with the anaesthetist will take place to determine the appropriate anaesthetic, during which the different forms of anaesthesia will be discussed with you in detail.

Patient wristband

After admission we would like to increase your safety by following the recommendation of the " "Patient Safety Coalition" and attaching an identification bracelet to your wrist. In addition to your name and date of birth, it contains your individual patient number and a barcode, which we can use to quickly retrieve your laboratory results, for example. This is intended to further reduce the risk of possible errors - for example, when administering medication.

OP checklists

We also follow the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) with the campaign "Safe Surgery Saves Lives". This includes a so-called checklist "PRÄ". With this checklist, the surgeon and anaesthetist jointly assess the risks to the patient's heart, circulation and respiration prior to the operation, which may be caused by previous illness and the type of operation.

There is also the "PERI" checklist with the team timeout. Here, the surgeon and anaesthetist use a checklist before the anaesthetic, as well as before and after the operation, to query certain aspects in order to prevent possible complications, such as a mix-up of sides or allergic reactions.

Modern operating centre

All surgical procedures are performed in our Operation Centre (OPZ), which is one of the most modern in Germany. Thanks to specially trained staff, operations are performed at the highest level of standardisation with all the necessary instruments. Patient safety includes standardised counting checks of instruments and abdominal tissues intraoperatively in accordance with the dual control principle as well as compliance with current hygiene guidelines.

Intensive care

After the operation, we provide optimal intensive medical care. In our anaesthesiologically managed intensive care units and ICU (Intermediate Care Unit), safe therapy continuation and monitoring is carried out post-operatively, especially for patients with severe pre-existing conditions. Every patient in the intensive care unit is visited twice a day - until they are transferred to the normal surgical ward. Here you will be personally cared for by our team until discharge.

Emergency care

As a maximum care provider and regional trauma centre, we care for patients in emergency situations of various kinds, such as after traffic accidents or in the case of acute, life-threatening complaints. Depending on the indication, operations can also be performed in these situations using minimally invasive ("keyhole technique").

External quality control

In order to make the high level of regularly performed operations even safer and to record differences in quality, the results are compared externally in the so-called IQM (Initiative Qualitätsmedizin www.initiative-qualitaetsmedizin.de).

In doing so, we voluntarily go beyond the existing legal requirements for quality assurance. Quality is measured on the basis of routine data, the transparency of the results is guaranteed by their publication, and quality improvements are also made through peer reviews. As a maximum care provider with extensive clinical experience, we frequently carry out peer reviews in other clinics.

We hope that this insight has enabled us to show you that your safety is our top priority during treatment and that we constantly strive to guarantee this at all times. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time
